6th Gen iPad Unlocked
Updated March 2020
- Apple Pencil Apple Pencil support is the major new feature in the sixth-generation iPad, and there are a ton of useful features to discover if you decide to get this accessory.
- Use a Bluetooth Mouse with iPad One of the best features of iPadOS is the ability to connect a mouse to iPad. To enable this feature (be sure the mouse you want to use is in Bluetooth discover mode): Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch > Devices > tap on the Mouse to add it to the iPad
- Put All Your Important Apps on the Dock The iPad makes it super easy to open commonly used apps by letting you put a ton of them on the dock. Press, hold, and drag the selected app into the dock. You can adjust the dock features in “Settings”
- Swipe Up to Go Home The new iPads have the same gesture as the iPhone X. Just swipe up to go to the Home screen instead of pressing the Home button.
- Quick Gesture For App Switching Quickly switch between apps by using a small arc style gesture. Just swipe left to right, making a small semi-circle and you’ll be able to switch to the most recent app.
- Turn the iPad Keyboard into a Trackpad There is a limited trackpad feature that can help you navigate your screen. Whenever the keyboard is available, you can long-press the spacebar to invoke the trackpad and move your cursor around.
- Use the QuickType Keyboard The iPad keyboard makes it easy to get to the symbols and numbers you use frequently. Swipe down quickly on the corresponding key to get to your primary punctuation symbols and numbers. Secondary options are still accessible by tapping the symbols key.
- Split the Keyboard in Half for Easier Typing Apple lets you split the keyboard in two so that its two halves go to either side of the display. You can also select a compacted, floating keyboard format as well.
- Use Split or Float View for Better Multitasking Split View multitasking is one of the iPad’s biggest advantages over the iPhone. Whenever you want to see two apps side-by-side, open one app the normal way, and then drag up the second app’s icon from the dock all the way to the left or right edge of the display. The app needs to already be in the dock for this to work. Float view will keep it on top of the first app. Split screen will split into two halves with an adjustable divider down the middle.
- Use the Files App for Better Organization Link and access Google Drive, One Drive, Dropbox, and iCloud in one app. Simple and basic, you’ll use two tabs. “Recent” lets you see all the documents you’ve recently used, and you can open them from there. “Browse” lets you see the doc folders for individual apps, and you make made additional folders for further organization.
- Open Recent Documents by Pressing the App Icon Open most recently used files, straight from the icon on the home screen or the dock. Press your finger on the app’s icon for a second, and a small window featuring thumbnails of the last four files will appear. Select the one you want, and it’ll immediately open.
- Drag and Drop Files/Photos into Emails or Messages Make sure you have the Photos app or files app running alongside Mail or Messages. You can then drag and drop files and images into emails or messages. Find the image/file you want and drag it across to the Message or email you're composing.
- New Features in Notes App Tap the screen with the Apple Pencil to activate the Notes app or access it quickly by adding it to your control panel.
- Use the Notes App as a Built-In Scanner Apple lets you scan documents and makes PDFs from those scans straight from the Notes app.
- Use the Drawing Features in Notes Add checklists, drawings, tables, and signatures. Handwriten notes are searchable by key word.
- Record Your iPad Screen You can easily record your iPad screen to show a process to someone. Go to Settings → Control Center → Customize Controls and turn on the Screen Recording toggle. Now, open the Control Center and tap Screen Recording toggle to start recording the screen (and the audio if you want).
- Copy Items from Your iPhone to Your iPad If your iPad and iPhone are on the same iCloud account, the same Wi-Fi-network, and Bluetooth is enabled, you can select “copy” on your iPhone and select “paste” on your iPad, and vice versa. “Handoff” needs to be selected via Settings → General → Airplay & Handoff
- Close Multiple Tabs in Safari Using Safari on the iPad is an amazing experience. But you do end up opening a lot of tabs quickly. Just tap and hold on the Tab Switcher button and tap on the Close All Tabs button to quickly close all open tabs.
- How to Take a Screenshot Use the Power and Home button at the same time to take a screenshot. Once a screenshot is taken, you’ll see a preview of it in the bottom-left corner. You can tap on it to quickly edit it or share it. You can also choose a full page screenshot, allowing you to capture not just what is on the screen but the entire page.
- How to Force Restart Your iPad If your iPad screen freezes up, or you find that it’s not responding to taps in the usual way, try a force restart instead. It won’t delete anything and no data will be lost. It’s the first thing to try if your iPad is unresponsive. Hold down the Power button and the Home button together until the iPad turns off and reboots. You can let go when you see the Apple logo on the screen.
